"Suddenly it's Christmas
The longest holiday.
When they say 'Season's Greetings'
They mean just what they say.
It's a season, it's a marathon
Retail eternity
And it's not over til it's over
And you throw away the tree."
I know, I know. It's too early for Christmas songs. But Loudon Wainwright III's "Suddenly It's Christmas" isn't really about Christmas.
It's about the way the weeks from Halloween to New Year's Day have congealed into one long, excruciating "holiday season."
The lyrics are powered by Wainwright's usual razor-sharp wit, of course. But the boisterousness of his performance makes it clear how delighted he is with the absurdity of it all.
I'm no Christmas Grinch, and I am in the throes of Christmas planning for Bolton FM, and I understand the importance of Christmas for our local businesses but I prefer to wait until the Christmas Light Switch On, which, this year, is 22 November.
This weekend Bolton FM is back at Bolton Library as we continue to support Black History month. Black History Month is a commemoration and celebration of achievements and contributions made by Black and other ethnic minority people. Highlighting achievements in Science, Medicine, Sports, Education, the Arts, Politics and many other walk of life from Black and ethnic minority people and how their achievements have transformed the world but they are all too often unrecognised and unacknowledged.
We hope to see you there!
It's now the time of year that I'm humming Loudon Wainwright III's "Suddenly it's Christmas", as Christmas items start appearing on the shelves.
